A striking magpie perched on a tree branch, its bold plumage enhanced by the light filtering through surrounding leaves and twigs. The original drawing was done in charcoal pencil on Bristol Board, which allowed for great contrast and detail.
This is one of my favourite images from the whole series, in part because it wasn't actually planned. I'd been feeding some magpies in a park in town after a meeting, but as I'd anticipated they were more skittish than the crows, swooping down to grab food as soon as my back was turned then straight off again the minute they caught me looking. I'd spotted this one in a tree watching me and the longer I looked, the further in he or she shuffled. I took a quick snap to post with a funny comment online when I got back, thinking it probably wouldn't come out at all and well, look at it!
